How to test UART program using LPC xpresso?

Hi all,
I'm quite new to this, I am using LPC1347 expresso board and lpcopen libraries. I want to test and check the UART program from the LPC open libraries (periph_uart_rb) .
I have little knowledge about gtkterm in ubuntu.
I have set up gtk term with same baud rate as it is in the C code but the message is not being transmitted and received.
Can someone help me out with this?

I recommend you to use cutecom.
