Git and the .cproject file

Hello,

I just upgraded from Red Suite 5 to LPCXpresso v6.1.0 [Build 164] [2013-10-21]. I have been using Git to keep track of each of my projects and have had Git track the .cproject files in the hopes that project settings would travel with the repository. This seemed to work without issue in Red Suite 5 but in LPCXpresso 6 the .cproject file is reordered during the first debug session each time I open the compiler. The file seems to alternate between two states. There doesn't seem to be a difference in function (only whitespace differences as far as I can tell) and the differences will cancel out every other debug. Is there any way that I can stop the .cproject file from being rearranged? It makes version control a bit more cumbersome. Or should I be tracking this file at all?

How many times do I have to say this? The ONLY configuration files you need are the .cproject and the .project files. Everything you need to transfer a project from one machine to another is contained within those two files.

As I said, if you don't believe me, look in any of the Example .zip files

I really want to understand this so that I know exactly what and what not
to put in git.

Are the Debug and Release configurations stored in .cproject or .project?
Or are they separate from these configuration files?

No.

You are going to have to explain exactly what you have done. For example, is LPCXpresso running while you are copying files about? What files are you copying and when?

However, I will not be able to offer much help, beyond what I have already suggested.

Do I need to run some kind of re-indexer or makefile builder?
It simply does not produce the axf file.

I have no idea what you have done wrong. Look at ANY of the examples and you will see what is exported/imported to create a complete project definition.

If you are copying files into a running LPCXpresso system, then you are going to run into trouble. A Refresh may help, but I don't think this will work if you are updating .cproject or .project files while the project is open.

As I said, I really recommend that you use eGit, which is designed to do this for you.

OK. How should I import this then. If I have the git directory with .cproject and .project and a /src directory with C code, is there anything else I should do when importing?
How should I define debug and release configurations? Are there any other settings held by eclipse?

I recommend that you use the eGit plugin for Eclipse - this integrates source code control directly into the IDE. You will be able to checkin/checkout/commit/etc. See:

However, the only files (apart from your sources) that need to be under source control are .cproject and .project. You do not need the Debug/Release directories.

I am also using git.
I would like to know which files I should save in order to define an LPCXpresso project (i.e. be able to import it to another machine).
Currently I am having to `scp -r' to get things copied across.
I have `.cproject'  `.project' `.settings/language.settings.xml' in it along with my src/ directory with its C files.

This still does not give a complete definition of the project.
Which other files or directories should I be including into my source code control system?

This information would make LPCXpresso projects more portable as well.
It would be useful to be able to zip them and email them etc.

The .cproject file contains all the settings for a C project. It is NOT regenerated automatically and is an essential part of any C (or C++) project. If your are use Source Control, it must be checked in.

Thanks for this info though. I was certain that a .cproject file was always regenerated hence making it obselete for commits. Could you tell us, though, why this is necessary please?
