Could somebody please tell me what this error means.

I clicked "help on this error" and got the attached. Not much help there, then?

The problem was rather more of a comedy of errors. The green "debug" icon was not compiling the project that I thought it was, and the result is that it was trying to put the program for an LPC1112 into an LPC812.

However, I do think that an error message that said "Device signature does not match" would have taken me to the cause of the problem in minutes rather than hours.

As per the comment from 1234567890, please post details of your setup including LPCXpresso version and debug probe, target MCU and board, what you were doing when you saw the error, and also the full debug log.

It would also be helpful to understand whether you have been able to successful program before or not?

Details about chip, IDE, hardware, software, occurrence/time of the message and so on could be very helpful...

A shot in the dark: See attachment.
