Hi all,

I work in an University where in the last few years almost everybody has bought an Apple computer. We usually work with Microchip PIC's, but your product is much better. Considering that your SDK is based on Eclipse, are you thinking in a develop for Mac computers? I'm sure there is a lot of engineers working in Mac that would appreciate this. We are still working with RS232 development kits under Windows and a change to a USB development kit under OSX would be an incredible improvement.

Thanks a lot.

its unbelievable how a good work could turn in to a piece of junk, why don't you provide linux software?
you've made a great job, but it's useless without linux support.

thanks for ur time

We provide a linux version of LPCXpresso. It has been available for several months. It is downloadable from www.code-red-tech.com/lpcxpresso.

For the moment, Microchip is losing the war closing their market to windows users (mostly thinking that the real programmers use to work everywhere but windows) while you have positioning yourselves in an advantage position allowing Linux users to use your tool too.

I think you overestimate the importance of the Linux version. It would be interesting to hear what is the percentage of Linux activations compared to Windows, if CodeRed can share that info. I don't expect Linux share to be greater than 10%, if that.

Hi all,

You have done a nice work porting the tools to Linux. I suppose Mac is the next logic step.

In my opinion, the most interesting Microprocessors Programming Tools are from NXP and Microchip with their new MicroStick development board. For the moment, Microchip is losing the war closing their market to windows users (mostly thinking that the real programmers use to work everywhere but windows) while you have positioning yourselves in an advantage position allowing Linux users to use your tool too.

Great jobs. Mac user are looking for your next steps into multi-platform developments.

Great job again :)

Although not nearly as fun and rewarding as using a bare micro controller, if you want an easy to use NXP LPC chip you could try the mBed at http://www.mbed.org.  It works with Windows, Linix, Mac because it uses a Web Browser to edit, compile and flash your programs.  It does not have a debugger per se.  You need to be creative and use LED, Serial Ports and USB ports to send debug info out of the controller.

[B]An annual survey released by the Eclipse Foundation, which oversees development of the Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE), shows that 32.7 percent of respondents use Linux as their primary desktop development system, an increase of almost six points from 2009.

You can read the rest here.

Here is another LPC development solution for my Linux friends:
http://www.microbuilder.eu/Projects/LPC1343ReferenceDesign/LPC1343Toolchain.aspx

There is also a library available on the site that allows access to most of the peripherals:

Let me just add another request for Linux support.  I'd much rather spend my time trying out the LPC parts than having to futz around with installing Windows and get it working in a VM.  Having to do that somewhat defeats the purpose of a "quick start" demo board for me.

Hello,

I have the tools running on Windows, but my work machine is using Linux, so my vote is for Linux.

Thanks.

This is likely a problem with the way Virtualbox formats an output used by an LPCXpresso component. There is a fix for this, so please contact us directly at http://www.code-red-tech.com/contact.php  so we can help resolve the problem.

Regards,

Please release an OSX version ...
I'm running LPCXpresso in Sun's VirtualBox and noticed something strange, apart from some USB trouble. When I boot into Windows (with bootcamp) and run Xpresso, I can debug a project including stdio.h  (like the "Hello world" example) without problems. If I do the same in the VirtualBox, I get a License error saying: "License restriction: Flash image too large for this license". Why is that? (the version running in the booted windows was the first that I activated - if it has something to do with that)

I'd like Linux version too. I'm Linux user, now I run LPCXpresso in VM which isn't exactly smooth and perfect.

It's a shame that only Windows OS is supported. For comparison the competitor's AVR32 Studio from Atmel (which I used) is available for both Windows and Linux together with the GNU toolchain, free of charge, and I believe unlimited version. Except the debugger part the software packages are very similar, using Eclipse and GNU tools. Like bulmer pointed out, those are available on many platforms so I see no problem there.

Please consider multiplatform release for future.

I'd like to add my vote for non-Windows platform support, without a VM.
I'd like Mac OS X and Linux.

Eclipse is available on many platforms.
The GNU tools are available on most platforms.
There is already DFU and HID support on most platforms.
So it seems like a real shame to restrict the IDE to Windows.

There are no current plans to support other operating systems with LPCXpresso. Your request has been noted.

However, LPCXpresso can be used in a VM under MacOSX. In fact one of our team uses it that way himself.

One issue to be aware of when running under a VM is the LPCXpresso board initially appears as a "USB device with DFU  capabilities". It is then booted by loading the firmware, which causes a  disconnect from USB and then a reconnect as a HID device. Some VMs do  not spot this switch, and so you have to manually force the VM to  re-enumerate/reconnect the USB devices. Apart from that we know of no other issues.
