The cheap TJA1040's work great if powered with a solid 5v supply.
However, if you are trying to make a USB Vbus powered device, they can only work up to a point.
My USB Vbus measures only 4.18v. This is way outside the TJA1040's operating spec, but it seems to work up to 500kbps on a really short length CAN bus.
To get 1Mbps, I have to power the TJA1040 with 5v from an external supply, then it works quite well.
So Zero's recommendation of using the TI SN65xx transceiver is well worth considering.
