lpc1788 SD card connection

I have the following question i`ve seen development  boards based on lpc1788 and all of them use SPI to access SD card when the MCU has sd card controller.I read that using four-bit SD bus is somehow closed licence and in order to use it i have to pay for i, my question is is that so and if yes can i use 1-bit SD bus for free(and where i can find code examples) or this  SD card controller is off limits (so to speak) for hobby electronics.

SD card on LPC1788 is working fine.

You may use this software which contains a working block driver:

Search a free FAT fs library, and you are almost done..

The SD card organisation does not enforce to sign a licence agreement for private use.
