K20 DSPI controlling SS

I'm looking at the DSPI docs and haven't yet found how to best go about controlling slave select. Can someone provide some insight as to how the designers intended that a programmer would control a single slave select pin? Program the PCS pin as GPIO? Use the polarity control for the PCS? Put the SPI in slave mode?

Customer could control the chip select signal with PUSH TX FIFO Register In Master Mode (SPIx_PUSHR) register [PCS[5:0]] bits.

Before set related register, customer need to config related pin with DSPI chip select function.
