Upgrade CW 3.1 to 5.0?

We purchased a number of USB-BDM Multilink devices and they all came with CodeWarrior 3.x except one... We use the things mostly on Star12 stuff, but also have a single 08 project.

Anyway, we needed to set up a temporary station so we grabbed the last backup BDM off the shelf and set it up. We still set it up from the master set we use and tossed the CD case in the 'archive' pile.

Only I noticed the printing was different on the cover. So I opened it and it came with CW 5.0 for the HC(S)08 and CW3.1 for the HC(S)12.

Now, Originally we went through upgrades from CW1.0 and then 2.0 and finally 3.0 and 3.1 so I'm not adverse to upgrading. And currently my 08 work is a 'single' project so it's not that big a deal to upgrade.

But... Are there any issues with a 3.1 to 5.0 upgrade of CW? Are there any differences that are noticable? As I said, not a big deal, but if there are differences with no apparant advantages to me now, I'll stay with 3.1 for both processors just for consistancy.

The compiler version of CW08 v3.1 is 2 years old, and many improvements were done on the compiler available with cw08 v5.1 (bug corrections, code size and code speed optimizations etc...)

I should have pointed out that all our projects are 100% assembler, so if there isn't an operational difference or an assembler differece, it's not an issue with me at this time.

But I'll take a look at the doc anyway.

Just my 10 cents on that one.

If you are programming in assembler, it should be less critical.

Only reason you would need to upgrade to V5.0 is if you change to a newer MCU, which is not supported by V3.0.

We will not produce service packs to upgrade V3.1 to support new derivatives. Going forward service packs will be created for V5.x only.

Note that latest HC08 release is V5.1, where you also have support for RS08 CPU.

No more processor upgrades for 3.1 for the 08? Or for 3.1 in general?

I ask because of the extensive stuff I'm doing with the 12. I was given codes to allow more capabilities with the 3.1 for the 12. (Specifically, number of files. I have a totally full 128K part and the file limit was a SEVERE restriction) If I have to upgrade that to get more processor support, will my license codes also upgrade? This might be an issue...

Hi Mike,

When someone is "given" code, it is difficult to argue when they stop working but it is even more difficult to argue as they will still be working.

CodeWarrior does cost money and Free alternatives are available and discussed about on this Forums.

Upgrades from 3.1 to 4.5 is already to be paid for on S12. Your subject line mentions v5.0, it does not exist yet on S12.

Stopping new packs does NOT mean the software becomes useless, it does only mean that it will stay the way it is now.

Is this the only major change between V5.0 and V5.1?  If so, I can see little point in upgrading since I am unlikely to use the RS08.  Is there any document that describes the differences?
