MC9RS08KA2 problem

I am working with a MC9RS08KA2 on a demo board and I was able to program the flash memory just fine until all of  a sudden it stopped working. i have no idea what i did to make it not work. it started displaying this message: "writing operation was unsuccessful. Either device is defective or not blank." To fix this i thought i'd replace the microcontroller with a spare one that i have but this did not work. when i plugged the old one in i now get this error: "communication eror. Target board is reset." and then when i say okay it displays: "Communication error during frequency detection. Possible causes: 1) Invalid device oscillator frequency, 2)The device has been reset"
I do not understand what is going on or how to make things back to how they were when the system was working. If someone could help me out I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Hello jackabo,

I could be totally wrong, but do I get a hint that the MCU devices were swapped with power still applied to the board?  If this was the case, it is possible that the MCUs are damaged.

Mac
