Can anyone tell me if these 2 parts are truly compatible? I've seen where someone has said the number minus the infamous 68HC but with the E suffix is just the RoHS version. If that's the case why not just add the E to an already existing number that has been around for literally decades? When looking up the MC705C8 on a franchise site, the link to the datasheet always brings up the 68HC datasheet. So I'm a bit lost on what dog whistles app is true and what is not. Any help appreciated. Thank you
Yes, the MC705C8 and MC68HC705C8E are highly compatible. The "68HC" prefix is often implied or dropped for the 705 series, which predominantly uses High-Speed CMOS technology. The "E" suffix typically denotes a RoHS-compliant version, meaning it meets environmental standards but is functionally identical to the non-E version. Manufacturers usually maintain a single datasheet (like for the MC68HC705C8) for these core parts, covering all minor variations. In essence, you can consider them interchangeable for most applications.
