MC68332 Replacement & 25MHz ->16MHz Compatibility

We currently use MC68332ACEH25 (25 MHz) in our design and are looking for replacement options.

1. Can you recommend a drop‑in 25 MHz MC68332 replacement that will work without any firmware changes?

2. If we replace the 25 MHz device with a 16 MHz part such as SPAKMC332AVFC16, using the same 32.768 kHz external crystal,
-Will the system still operate correctly?
- Or are firmware updates required (TPU timing, SCI/QSPI baud rates, PIT, watchdog, etc.)?

Thank you.

Hi @Dhanraj9

Thanks for your post

The MC68332 family is in End-of-life status this also applies for the SPAKMC332AVFC16.

The firmware between SPAKMC332AVFC16 and MC68332 could be use without issues, only be aware that all the configurations depending on the system clock will require firmware recalibration like the ones you mention (TPU timing, SCI/QSPI baud rates, PIT, watchdog, etc.).

There is not a pin-compatible/software compatible option that is listed as active device, the recommendation is to move to a new 32 bit MCU, due to the number of pins of the package you could review the MCX A Series Microcontrollers, if you want a more suitable suggestion for a replacement, please let me know more details about your project.
