In Freescale USB Stack with PHDC support there is a msd device example where they have SD card driver.

See www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdtRyQ-2IrE (this is for the Kirin3 tower but the Kinetis tower has the same).

The demo shown is not 'bare-metal' as such but the SD card module itself is (99%, apart from SD card formating and sector counting as background activity when the info block is lost in FAT32 mode - these can take several minutes / several seconds to complete otherwise on large SD cards).

 SD card documentation at http://www.utasker.com/docs/uTasker/uTasker_utFAT.PDF (the Coldfire uses SPI and the Kinetis uses either SPI or SDHC interfaces).
