i.MX7D Custom Board hanging on boot with NXP v4.9 kernel

Hello,

We have a in-production custom board based largely on the mx7 sabre board.  Our current kernel is based on the the v4.1 BSP from NXP, and I was exploring upgrading to the v4.9 BSP.  Both a custom kernel and the NXP-provided binary BSP kernel hang when booting, typically nearby eMMC access.  Panic logs vary from boot to boot.

I've tried to construct a minimal DTS, based on the imx7d-sdb.dts file, but the NXP kernel from the 4.9 BSP still cannot boot.

(Could this have something to do with CPU freq switching?  Any way to disable that?)

Any assistance with this issue would be much appreciated.  This is a production board which has no issues on the v4.1 kernel, so I am not suspecting hardware issues.

one can try to debug it usng sect.2.3.3.2.1 Source Code Structure, also

there may be ddr errors so one can try to update calibration

coefficients with ddr test, additionally one can try linux memtester

i.MX6/7 DDR Stress Test Tool V2.90 

Frequency switching could be disabled using descriptions in

sect.2.3.3 CPU Frequency Scaling (CPUFREQ), 2.3.4 Dynamic Bus Frequency

attached Linux Manual.

Igor, thanks for the info.  This led me to the solution — I needed to boost the VDDARM voltage when switching CPU speeds.  I set this in the operating-points section of the DTS file.

The difference between v4.1 and v4.9 is that the kernel config added a new default cpu speed governor, which was changing speeds at different times, and revealed the bug.

One interesting discovery I have made:

If I remove the vddarm reference from the cpu0 block in the dts, like so:

&cpu0 {
     // arm-supply = <&sw1a_reg>;
};

Then the board boots.  The cpufreq driver complains a lot about being unable to scale vddarm up or down.

I'm not sure what this means, except that maybe the hang is due to power sag on vddarm.  However, this board (as I said) works perfectly on v4.1. 

So, did something change in power handling in the kernel which could explain this behavior?
