FXOS8700C Compass Calibration on FRDM-64F Board

Hello everyone.

As the attachment shows the option of magnetic calibration when using the NXP compass and the Freedom board with the Sensor Tool software, what calibration method is adopted by the Sensor Tool software? For example, the max-and-min calibration method, or the least square calibration method? Also, should I rotate the compass in a figure of eight? Or should I rotate the compass in the horizontal plane only? Or should I rotate the compass in the horizontal plane and one vertical plane?

Thank you very much,

-Shawn

Hi Shawn,

Below are responses for your Questions:

Q1) What calibration method is adopted by the Sensor Tool software?

A1) Sensor Fusion implements both Hard Iron Offset Calibration and well as Soft Iron Offset Calibration. For additional details refer to the Application Note AN4246 available @ NXP - Calibrating an eCompass.

Q2) Should I rotate the compass in a figure of eight? Or should I rotate the compass in the horizontal plane only? Or should I rotate the compass in the horizontal plane and one vertical plane?

A2) For effective calibration you should rotate the eCompass:

  • In a figure of eight

OR

  • Across all 3 X,Y,Z Axis individually
