Hello!

I have a question about the earlier Motorola DSPB56362PV120 vs. the Freescale DSPB56362PV100 and what acually is different between the two?

As I've understand, the one ending with 120 is the 120MHz version, while the latter, that ends with 100, is the 100MHz version.

Are these variants essentially the same DSP where both can be run at 120MHz? I ask since when the 100-version is "overclocked" to 120MHz it seems to be running just fine in a synthesizer.

From factory, the synthesizer had the 120MHz version in it, and after repair it was fitted with the 100-version, but overclocked to 120MHz. Seems to be running fine and according to other repairs it seems to work well in the long run too.

Or could there be generated (for the DSP dangerously-) high temperatures by the overclocking?

Thanks!

Dear Karl H,
Pls refer to the following figure, you are right that the frequency of DSPB56362PV120 is 120MHz, the frequency of DSPB56362PV100 is 100MHz. For the sake of  reliability, I suggest you run the  DSPB56362PV100 in 100MHz although it works in 120MHz for a short time.

Dear X.j.,

Thank you for the explanation!

The 100MHz version is now running in a repaired Access Music - Virus C synthesizer, which actually used the 120MHz version from factory when new back in 2003.

My question, regarding to your reply, would then be:

What exactly do you mean by "for a short time"?
Do you mean shorter sessions, like 20-30 minutes instead of several hours? And what would happen then? Would the DSP self-throttle and shutdown until its cool, but then work again or would there be permanent damage and it'll have to be replaced once again?
Or do you mean it could be used like that for some weeks perhaps, but if used like that for months or years it would be damaged and therefore defective, once again needed to be repaired/replaced?

Sorry for my follow-up questions, I'm just trying to get my head around what I have to deal with here.

Thank you once again!

Hi, K.H

If the processor mask specifies the clock frequency as 100MHz, it means that we have tested and guaranteed that it can work in 100MHz in the full temperature range and for all samples.

But we do not guarantee it can work in 120mhz in full temperature range and for all samples for DSPB56362PV100.
