The K60 series comes with Ethernet 1588 capabilities. My question is does the 1588 provide any useful incremental functionality when not using the 1588 hardware clocking lines, or using a non-1588 capable PHY? That is, is the 1588 hardware internal to the K60 able to operate at the Ethernet packet level and provide some level of time synchronization benefit, or is external hardware a requirement to make this useful?

I found a nice application note from Freescale that answers my own question. Sub-microsecond resolution is possible without a 1588 PHY.
The K60 have a internal MAC which support 1588 clock,so we just need a common PHY to come true the 1588 clock synchronization.
