Yes, it is possible to upgrade the firmware of ZSTAR and ZSTAR2 to support ZSTAR3 functionalities!
You'll need two things:
1) The firmware for ZSTAR3. This package also includes code for ZSTAR and ZSTAR2 (see Note1 below)
2) A BDM-programmer, e.g. USBSPYDER08
In the firmware folder structure you'll have a folder named 'Sensor_ZStar', where the CW project is located (Sensor QG8.mcp).
In this project it's possible to select the desired target (e.g. ZSTAR1 or 2). Now compile and download!
I managed to upgrade the ZSTAR2 sensor board without any (major) problems.
Last thing: As far as I remember, the ZSTAR (MMA7260Q) do not have the BDM pins soldered on. It only has pads, so you need to do mount it yourself.
