Hi NXP team

A customer wants to know how much throughput of WIFI-5G can perform in IMX-RT1170 class products.
Please share the performance data in IMX-RT of NXP WIFI-5G or 6G products.
The project need to support 500 mbps performance.

Thanks.

James

Hi Oliver

Let me ask more question about Throughput on i.MX RT1070/80.

Can you specify the desired target throughput on 1170 and 1180?

How much performance improvement should we expect compared to 1160?

" i.MXRT1170 should have slightly better performances due to its higher CPU clock, compared to i.MXRT1060, but we are far from 500Mbit/s."

Thanks.

James

Dear @JK_Cha

Let me remind that we can get much better Wifi throughput when using i.MX6/7/8/9 host running Linux, compared to RT hosts.

I confirm that the most limiting factor for RT platforms (regarding Wifi throughput ) is the CPU power (more than SDIO interface).

Wifi SW is running on the i.MX RT Cortex-M7:

i.MX RT1180*Cortex-M7 @800 MHz
i.MX RT1170Cortex-M7 @1 GHz
i.MX RT1160Cortex-M7 @600 MHz
i.MX RT1064Cortex-M7 @600 MHz
i.MX RT1060Cortex-M7 @600 MHz

For now, I only have measurements on RT1060 platform, but I can state that the throughput performances will be:

- same on RT1060, 1064, 1160

- compared to RT1060, better on RT1180, and even better on RT1170

Olivier

Dear @simhyeongjun

Some NXP wifi chipsets (2x2 MIMO, wifi 5 or 6, like 88W8997 or 88W9098) reach much more than 500Mbit/s throughput on Linux platforms (like i.MX6/7/8). But these NXP chipsets are not supported on i.MX RT platforms.

Due to i.MX RT1170 limitations (only support SDIO interface, and limited CPU power), NXP only support 1x1 NXP wifi chipsets using SDIO interface on that platform for now: 88W8801 (1x1 Wifi 4), IW416 (1x1 Wifi 4), 88W8987 (1x1 Wifi 5)

With 88W8987 for instance, using i.MXRT1060 with latest SDK 2.13

- in STA mode, we reach 70Mbit/s TCP / 130Mbit/s UDP (802.11ac, 5GHz, 80MHz bandwidth)

- in AP mode, we reach 40Mbit/s TCP / 130Mbit/s UDP  (802.11ac, 5GHz, 80MHz bandwidth)

i.MXRT1170 should have slightly better performances due to its higher CPU clock, compared to i.MXRT1060, but we are far from 500Mbit/s.

IW611 Wifi 6 chipset will be supported by i.MX RT1170 later this year, but I do not have throughput measurement available yet.

This chipset reach 400Mbit/s throughput on linux platforms, but it will have lower performances on RT platforms due to CPU power constraint.

Olivier
