Failed to mount rootfs from emmc

Hello! I moved to latest BSP releas - imx_4.9.88_2.0.0_ga - and failed to boot with it.

Booting stops on mounting rootfs and after some time it prints sdhci register dumps and kernel panic stack. And while linux retrying to send commands to emmc, short blinks occures on display.

I work with our custom board with imx6d, I haven't SD slots - only soldered emmc (samsung klmag2ge4a-a001). Bootloader boots from spi-nor, read kernel and device-tree from 1-st partition of emmc and try to mount rootfs from 2-nd partition of this emmc.
Kernel 4.9.11 works fine on this board. On sbresd board both 4.9.11 and 4.9.88 kernels works fine - boots from SD and from emmc.

I see in boot log that kernel can't open root device (mmcblk3p2) but u-boot works fine with it, I can map it to OTG by 'ums' command and write image from host machine without errors. And previous kernel 4.9.11 boots fine with the same configurations.

igorpadykov‌, can you help me?

Hi Maxim

issue may be caused by mmc numbering, as in linux there is mmcblk3,

while in uboot only "SDHC: 0, FSL_SDHC: 1, FSL_SDHC: 2", one can check

sect.Table 37. Linux uSDHC relationships attached Linux Guide

Best regards
igor

Hi Igor! Thank you for reply!

Issue is not solved yet.

In our boad only uSDHC 4 is present, so mmcroot configured as mmcblk3. In u-boot "mmc dev 2" = "mmcblk3" in linux, as I can see in u-boot sources.

uSDHC configuration from device tree:

usdhc4: usdhc@0219c000 {
   compatible = "fsl,imx6q-usdhc";
   reg = <0x0219c000 0x4000>;
   interrupts = <0 25 IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_HIGH>;
   clocks = <&clks IMX6QDL_CLK_USDHC4>,
   <&clks IMX6QDL_CLK_USDHC4>,
   <&clks IMX6QDL_CLK_USDHC4>;
   clock-names = "ipg", "ahb", "per";
   bus-width = <4>;
   status = "disabled";
};

&usdhc4 {
   pinctrl-names = "default";
   pinctrl-0 = <&pinctrl_usdhc4>;
   bus-width = <8>;
   non-removable;
   no-1-8-v;
   keep-power-in-suspend;
   status = "okay";
};

pinctrl_usdhc4: usdhc4grp {
   fsl,pins = <
   MX6QDL_PAD_SD4_CMD__SD4_CMD 0x17059
   MX6QDL_PAD_SD4_CLK__SD4_CLK 0x10059
   MX6QDL_PAD_SD4_DAT0__SD4_DATA0 0x17059
   MX6QDL_PAD_SD4_DAT1__SD4_DATA1 0x17059
   MX6QDL_PAD_SD4_DAT2__SD4_DATA2 0x17059
   MX6QDL_PAD_SD4_DAT3__SD4_DATA3 0x17059
   MX6QDL_PAD_SD4_DAT4__SD4_DATA4 0x17059
   MX6QDL_PAD_SD4_DAT5__SD4_DATA5 0x17059
   MX6QDL_PAD_SD4_DAT6__SD4_DATA6 0x17059
   MX6QDL_PAD_SD4_DAT7__SD4_DATA7 0x17059
>;
};

Other uSDHC are disabled.

Previous kernel (4.9.11) boots fine with the same u-boot and device-tree. May be in new kernel there are any changes in mmc configuration? Something like hardcoded offsets or dma configurations or something else... How blinks on display may be explained? May be I should try to compile kernel from special commit?

Hi Maxim

do you mean that uSDHC 4 is visible as "mmc dev 2"in uboot.

NXP linux sources are located on

linux-imx - i.MX Linux kernel

Thank you for the link but problrm is not to properly give root device to kernel. Problem is to mount given root device.

I tryed to set root device by UUID - kernel can find mmcblk3p2 by this uuid but cant mount it.

Getting device idx by mmc_get_reserved_index() not helped too.

On sabresd it can boot both from SD and from emmc, but on sabresd another emmc chip.

Diference in mounting: on sabresd to rootfs partition assign block device 179:10, on custom board - 179:2. Kernel 4.9.11 create block device 179:34.

you can try to replace this emmc with one on sabre sd board to narrow down issue.

If you think issue is definitely in kernel, please provide steps how it can be

reproduced on sabre sd board. Also may be useful to check

eMMC 8GB to 4GB - crash on linux (yocto) boot

Thans for the link, will check it.

Also, our customer tell me that they built new kernel and boot it successful. There are SD slots on their version of board. So I think, the issue may be in device-tree configurations.

It seems I solved the problem. Regulator SW4 was disabling before mounting rootfs and everything hangs. I found in when tested another board and that board hanged exactly on disabling regulators. I add "regulator-always-on;" parameter to it in device tree and can boot up the board now. But why old kernel worked with disabled SW4 on the same hardware?

I think that issue in kernel because older versions (nxp 4.9.11, fslc 4.1) works fine with the same hardware, bootloader, rootfs and device tree.

What am I doing is:

- get build environment from NXP repo, as discribed in Yocto project manual (branch imx_4.9.88+2.0.0_ga)

- build core-image-minimal

- connect board to host PC via OTG

- boot up board, enter u-boot shell, run command 'ums mmc 2'

- on host PC flash image.sdcard to emmc by 'dd' command or manualy partition disk and copy files

- sync and umount disk, Ctrl+C on u-boot shell

- setenv mmcdev 2

- setenv mmcroot /dev/mmcblk3p2 rootwait rw

- boot

On sabresd it works, on custom board it failes to mount rootfs.

Our emmc chip is Samsung KLMAG2GE4A-A001

Hello!

With MFGtool I have another problem: it cant find device. Neither sabresd, nor custom board.

On linux it prints:

./linux-runvbs.sh mfgtool2-yocto-mx-sabresd-emmc.vbs
mfgtool2-yocto-mx-sabresd-emmc.vbs
Executing: ./mfgtoolcli -l eMMC -s board=sabresd -s sxdtb=sdb -s mmc=3
Your Options:
board: sabresd
sxdtb: sdb
mmc: 3
Ready to flash.
init op Failed code# 24

On Windows (under Virtual Box) it cant find device, but "HID compatable device" with proper VID/PID appears in device manager. Should I somehow install mfgtool or is it permissions issue? I cant find anything about it in documentation. Start MFGTool after connecting device, as mentioned in user guide.

from u-boot "ums mmc 2" - export mmc device via OTG
from host dd image.sdcard to this device
On sabresd I flashed image to emmc by the same way - boot is ok.
Will try mfgtool tomorrow.
