Connection of Ethernet PHY and i.MX6

Hi all

Let me confirm about i.MX6 and Ethernet PHY.

Can i.MX6 connect directly to Ethernet PHY ?

I will plan to use a AR8031 in my board because SABRE board is used it.

To use as reference, I have checked two schematics of MCIMX6SX-SDB and SABRE-AVB.

As a result, I found the connection between MCIMX6SX-SDB and SABRE-AVB is a different.

The difference is below:

・MCIMX6SX-SDB has direct connection.

・SABRE-AVB connects via NC7WV16.

Why the SABRE-AVB connects via buffer(NC7WV16) ?

I guess the board needs buffer because it is daughter board type.

Is it correct ?

If not, please tell me the reason.

Furthermore, if you have information, please share me about a distance which is required buffer.

the reason for the drivers is noted next to the drivers itself in the schematic:

"Drivers are included in the receive path due to long

signal paths and board-to-board connector. Adopters

should place the PHY and processor on the same board,

and eliminate the drivers. Refer to

Atheros documentation for

additional guidance."

Hello ko-hey,

Both the i.MX6 SABRE-SD and the i.MX6 SABRE AI CPU card use the AR8031 with a direct connection. I couldn’t locate the schematic for the SABRE-AVB but in case the i.MX6 and the Ethernet PHY are not in the same board I would say the buffer would make sense. Otherwise it is not required.
