tfa9882 not producing audio from i2s bus with an atmel samr21 mcu

I connected an atmel samr21 mcu to a tfa9882 amp board using an i2s bus configured to the gpio pins on the mcu. I am able to send data over to the tfa9882 but the sound is not coming of the speaker. It is a mono setup for 1 speaker. Im thinking that right now its a frequency problem.
