What is the difference between HC08 and HCS08 families?

From a developer's standpoint, HC08's MON08 interface can be a real pain compared to the HCS08's BDM interface.  As stated, HCS08 is far superior.

Simply put HCS08 (or S08) is a later updated version of the HC08.

Here is an application note about it.

If you know little about either I would suggest you simply forget HC08 ever existed and just look at the S08.

S08 is always better, cheaper and most of the HC08's are dying off.
