custom splash screen - i.mx6ull yocto

My goal is to have a custom splash screen displayed from power up through my application's start.

I'm using an i.mx6ULL with a Phytec Yocto Vendor distribution (BSP-Yocto-Vendor-phyBOARD-Segin-PD17.1.2) with a 3x5 lcd display.  I've been searching, and believe I need to modified the psplash recipe, but have not had any success.

Please point me at available documentation, or give instruction on how to show my custom splash screen.
