Hi,

Do you use internal i.MX PLL to ref clk the module?

Please try to increase timeout in retries times in imx6_pcie_wait_for_speed_change

Thank you,

Below is the clock configuration from the device tree.

		pcie: pcie@1ffc000 {
			compatible = "fsl,imx6q-pcie", "snps,dw-pcie";
			reg = <0x01ffc000 0x04000>,
			      <0x01f00000 0x80000>;
			reg-names = "dbi", "config";
			#address-cells = <3>;
			#size-cells = <2>;
			device_type = "pci";
			bus-range = <0x00 0xff>;
			ranges = <0x81000000 0 0          0x01f80000 0 0x00010000 /* downstream I/O */
				  0x82000000 0 0x01000000 0x01000000 0 0x00f00000>; /* non-prefetchable memory */
			num-lanes = <1>;
			num-viewport = <4>;
			interrupts = <GIC_SPI 120 IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_HIGH>;
			interrupt-names = "msi";
			#interrupt-cells = <1>;
			interrupt-map-mask = <0 0 0 0x7>;
			interrupt-map = <0 0 0 1 &gpc GIC_SPI 123 IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_HIGH>,
					<0 0 0 2 &gpc GIC_SPI 122 IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_HIGH>,
					<0 0 0 3 &gpc GIC_SPI 121 IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_HIGH>,
					<0 0 0 4 &gpc GIC_SPI 120 IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_HIGH>;
			clocks = <&clks IMX6QDL_CLK_PCIE_AXI>,
				 <&clks IMX6QDL_CLK_LVDS1_GATE>,
				 <&clks IMX6QDL_CLK_PCIE_REF_125M>;
			clock-names = "pcie", "pcie_bus", "pcie_phy";
			status = "disabled";
		};

An increase in the usleep_range values did not improve the situation. The error message "Speed change timeout" also does not appear in the logs as one would expect if this is where the issue was occuring

hi,

I don't expect a solution to be handed to me, but some communication would be greatly appreciated

Some new information I have observed:

The PCI-MSI interrupts for the Intel i211 NIC are not being serviced

333:          0          0   PCI-MSI 524288 Edge      eth1
334:          0          0   PCI-MSI 524289 Edge      eth1-rx-0
335:          0          0   PCI-MSI 524290 Edge      eth1-rx-1
336:          0          0   PCI-MSI 524291 Edge      eth1-tx-0
337:          0          0   PCI-MSI 524292 Edge      eth1-tx-1

 which is causing the IGB driver to continuously reset the adapter

on some of our boards the following error message appears 100% of the time

[ 8.590596] pci 0000:00:00.0: bridge configuration invalid ([bus 00-00]), reconfigurin

For completeness:

The issue is the result of the wrong class being detected (wrong: 0x000000 correct 0x060400)

I am not sure why this is occurring. Perhaps there has been some timing change and the bridge does not have enough time to   fully initialize itself. HW wise there have been no changes and this issue did not present itself when using kernel 5.4.142 branch 5.4-2.1.x-imx_var01

Due to the class not being detected correctly as 0x060400 (PCI_CLASS_BRIDGE_PCI_NORMAL) the imx6_pcie_quirk() function in drivers/pci/controller/dwc/pci-imx6.c was not being executed

As a workaround I have made the following changes

diff --git a/drivers/pci/controller/dwc/pci-imx6.c b/drivers/pci/controller/dwc/pci-imx6.c

This is no where near ideal but gets me around the issue for now

Questions

  • What has changed timing wise between 5.15.71 and 5.4.142?
    • I realize this is probably impossible to answer, but the change must be SW side as the HW is unmodified
  • If in fact the bridge is not able to fully initialize before the class information is read out, how can this behavior be modified?
    • This is probably not NXP/iMX6 specific behavior. I will look into this
  • Are you aware of anything else that could/would result in the class information being occasionally incorrect?

Hi,

Thank you for your interest in NXP Semiconductor products,

The issue may be caused because the power sequence performed in those instances.

Is the module connected over M.2? Have you tried other modules?

Are you using Variscite BSP?

Is this reproducible on EVK with NXP BSP?

Regards

Thank you for your reply

>> The issue may be caused because the power sequence performed in those instances.

What options do I have to influence this?

>> Is the module connected over M.2? Have you tried other modules?

No, we are using an Intel I211 Ethernet controller via PCIe

>> Are you using Variscite BSP?

Yes. https://github.com/varigit/variscite-bsp-platform/blob/kirkstone/kirkstone-5.15.71-2.2.0.xml

>> Is this reproducible on EVK with NXP BSP?

I'm not sure this is a realistic option at this time

The issue is also recognizable before

[ 0.699937] pci 0000:00:00.0: bridge configuration invalid ([bus 00-00]), reconfiguring

the following can be seen in the error case:

[ 0.694230] pci 0000:00:00.0: [16c3:abcd] type 01 class 0x000000

and in the working case:

[ 0.694035] pci 0000:00:00.0: [16c3:abcd] type 01 class 0x060400
