Detect HDMI monitor plugged in at run time?

Is there any kind of API call that I can make to determine if an HDMI monitor is attached at run time?

I need to call from my application.

I am using Linux yocto build on an iMX8m.

one can look at function imx_hdp_connector_detect() in

linux/drivers/gpu/drm/imx/hdp/imx-hdp.c
