Vehicles need to accurately grasp the world around them - just like the human driver - in order to drive autonomously. Automotive technology aims to fit vehicles with capabilities even beyond the senses of the human driver, allowing to make the most intelligent decisions in real time. The information that vehicle sensors collect must not only be real time and accurate but also be secure against hacking attacks so that we can trust them with our lives. Reliable ADAS and appropriate security measures are a key ingredient in self-driving cars. Vehicle-to-X technology, extends the visibility beyond the sight of drivers to "see" around corners and through obstacles. External sensor information and internal data from the car networks are vital to help to eliminate the 1.3 million road accidents happening on global roads each year.

Today’s Infotainment systems are an important part of the driving experience. Complexity of these systems is increasing yet OEM development schedules are being compressed to bring consumers the latest in connectivity, entertainment, and security, at the lowest possible cost. A group of industry experts will discuss: How to approach platform development (customer specific vs market segment). The winning architecture at the system and IC level (distributed vs integrated solutions)? Managing quickly changing technologies such as displays, connectivity, security? How to continue development of increasingly complex software systems. Will the Infotainment system become a cockpit electronics module? How to manage mixing infotainment and safety-related functions like cluster indicators and “convenience” ADAS features?

The hottest topic in automotive design today is the concept of the eCockpit -- where all visual functions in the car are controlled across multiple screens and fully integrated for the driver’s convenience. The key technology that enables eCockpit to run on a single processor also offers new capabilities in industrial, embedded and consumer products such as drones, manufacturing HMI interfaces and smart displays. This class will cover the fundamental technologies and architectural techniques in the i.MX 8 processor which enables rich eCockpit functionality, how NXP has implemented the world’s most significant full chip virtualization capabilities in an ARM-based processor and breaks down the eCockpit demo from the Tech Lab.  Watch Video Presentation

NXP’s latest generation of passive UHF RFID, called UCODE® DNA, can be used in Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) systems that make it easier to identify – and collect from – drivers of vehicles that aren’t properly registered. In an AVI system for vehicle registration, readers can be installed above, below, or to the side of the road. They can also be embedded in a handheld device, for use by government personnel. The tag, attached to the vehicle, uses the energy produced by the reader’s RF field, so there’s no need for a battery and the tag has a very long lifespan. Cryptography-based security minimizes errors and practically eliminates fraud. Vehicle owners (and fee collectors) can be confident that the right person is being billed, since readings are both highly accurate and highly secure.

A modern car is more than just transport, it provides comfortable heating and cooling, navigation systems, entertainment systems, and a lot of data about the car's health and performance. Including how well you are conserving fuel or when to seek service. All of this is a challenge to present to the driver and passengers, without distraction to driving, under all conditions from bright daylight to the dark of night, in any temperature. We talk about both Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) component solutions that keep your dashboard simple, readable, and helpful. Watch Video Presentation
