Debugger for the MPC5777M

We are beginning a project that uses the MPC5777M processor and will start out using the EVB.  I have found 3 companies that supply JTAG debuggers for it but the quotes that I am getting are wildly different from each other ($399 to $15,000), so I am wondering whether one is as good as another. We will be using the HSM core, so this is important but all of the vendors so far are saying that they support it.

So, what debuggers are people using and how are they working for you, and is it working with the HSM core?

Additionally, is there any unusual setup required?  I have found things that seem to indicate that there are scripts that need to be run to enable the part in some way and am concerned that maybe one debugger supports them but not another.

Thanks

Hi Roger,

MPC5777M is powerful multicore device, so my recommendation is to use high-end debugger like from www.lauterbach.com. Ask them for quotation of LA-3500 together with LA-3206 – this is what we have here (well, I have older LA-7753 instead of LA-3206 but it doesn’t matter). This is typical setup of our customers doing some serious work. The price is not so high as you mentioned. It would be high if you need also tracing. Please do not consider this as an advertisement, it’s our experience. My opinion is that it’s better to spend more money at the beginning and save a lot of time later during the debugging. Comparing the cost of debugger and cost of time spent by debugging – the money will return back very soon.

Pemicro Multilink FX is also an option but it’s rather entry level debugger. I have no experience with Multilink+HSM, not sure about that, but I would stick rather to mentioned high-end debugger.

Regards,

Lukas
