I'm sure this is a dumb question but is the ATA controller on the MCF54455 only for PATA? I want to implement SATA, do I just need a PATA to SATA converter? or maybe there is a better coldfire product that suit my needs? Thanks in advance.

PATA only. AFAIK there are no Coldfire processors with a SATA core in them.
No SATA on ColdFire, but a search for "SATA" gets hits on MPC83xx and i.MX53. So you could use those parts is you don't mind changing CPU families.
