Problem losing serial pin on MC9S08AC16

Have had a high failure rate of the receive pin on SCI on MN9S08AC16 in SDIP package pin 13 PortE1 10-15%. The chip is in a remote display that connects to serial RS232 communications, there is RS232 to logic level circuity before the pin. On bad chip can set pin to output and switch data between high and low but pin is always low. A field engineer from freescale thought it was electrostatic discharge but the room is tile and we have never had this problem in the past. Anyone have any problem with losing chips to electrostatic discharge or have any ideas?
