Interactive Bluetooth beacon for geocaching

Title: Interactive Bluetooth beacon for geocaching

Motivation

Geocaching, an outdoor recreational activity, traditionally relies on GPS coordinates to hide and seek containers. Integrating Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons can add an interactive layer to this experience. The motivation for this thesis is to enhance geocaching by designing a BLE beacon prototype that interacts with users, making the activity more engaging and dynamic.

Analysis

This phase examines current geocaching techniques and BLE technology. Existing literature shows a growing interest in adding interactivity to geocaching. BLE beacons, with their low power consumption and message transmission capabilities, are ideal for this purpose. Analysis focuses on how these beacons can improve user experience and evaluates technical specifications like range and battery life.

Design

The design phase defines the beacon's functional requirements, including message transmission and user interaction capabilities. The prototype uses accessible hardware like BLE modules and microcontrollers like KW45. Software development focuses on programming the beacon to send messages, such as GPS coordinates, and respond to user interactions, ensuring a user-friendly interface.

Implementation

Implementation involves building the BLE beacon prototype based on the defined requirements. The beacon is programmed to transmit specific messages and respond to user proximity or queries. The design ensures that the beacon is power-efficient and easy to use, enhancing the geocaching experience by providing interactive elements.

Testing

Testing the prototype involves real-world trials to assess its performance and reliability. The beacon's functionality is evaluated in various geocaching scenarios to ensure it meets user interaction requirements. Feedback from these tests is used to refine the prototype, ensuring it is robust, user-friendly, and enhances the geocaching experience.
