I am planning to use the MC33879A for a new design which will be in production at least until 2025. Is this circuit still a good choice or are there newer ones? Requirements: 8 x 0.5A output at 10-17V supply voltage and operating temp -30 to +50C. Short circuit protection and fault status reading needed.

Hi Dirk,

 

The MC33879A does have an Active status as can be seen on the product website and is recommended for new designs. Currently there are no plans to discontinue it.

Hi Tomas,

our EMS received the information that this part will become EOL per 1 December 2021 due to the Oak Hill Fab Scale down? Is this true or is this part continued with a different part number MC33879TEK?

Hi Dirk,

The MC33879APEK(/R2) will be transferred to the Chandler, AZ fab with same form, fit and function. However, a new part number (MC33879BPEK) will be set up.

The MC33879TEK(/R2) will continue as is (fab was not Oak Hill), so no impact.

Is MC33879BPEK recommended for new designs?

 

I'm seing the following for MC33879 on NXP product-longevity page:

"Remains in Longevity Program until Dec 2021"

 

What does this mean?

Can I expect MC33879BPEK to be available for a few more years?

If not, is there anything similar to replace it?

Hi Tomas,

Please answer if I understand your table correct -

MC33879BPEK (which hopefully is 100% function and spec wise equal to MC33879A) will be available in Dec. 2022 (PPAP) while MC33879A last order date is one year before in Dec. 2021.

So we have to order full 2022 demand (plus some months until MC33879BPEK can be delivered after PPAP) within the next 2 months. Correct?

Last Ship Date 1. Dec. 2023 is for MC33879A. MC33879BPEK is planned to be available 10 to 15 years from now?

Yes, there are few differences as shown in Table 2 of the datasheet.

Hi Tomas,

that sounds good. Just wanted to check since the device is from 2006 and Long Term Availability guarantees 15 years => 2021.

I do not see any distinguishing characteristics between MC33879APEK and MC33879TEK on datasheet. Please elaborate.
