The mil/aero industry is experiencing an increasing demand for COTS DO-254 safety critical solutions. Trends such as the digitization of cockpits, commercial technology complexity, and the use of common avionics subsystems in military and commercial aircraft have solidified the need for DO-254 compliance in military platforms. DO-254 certification was traditionally achieved using costly custom built systems; however, cost-effective COTS modules are now becoming the hardware of choice to reduce the applicant’s risk, time to market, and budget concerns while meeting stringent certification requirements. We will discuss the benefits and concerns of implementing COTS modules for DO-254 certification.

A modern car is more than just transport, it provides comfortable heating and cooling, navigation systems, entertainment systems, and a lot of data about the car's health and performance. Including how well you are conserving fuel or when to seek service. All of this is a challenge to present to the driver and passengers, without distraction to driving, under all conditions from bright daylight to the dark of night, in any temperature. We talk about both Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) component solutions that keep your dashboard simple, readable, and helpful. Watch Video Presentation

The problem of smartphones running out of battery power too soon during the day is well known and in response new fast charging standards have been introduced, ranging from multi-level output ones like USB Power Delivery and Quick Charge to 5V/multi-Amp proprietary Direct Charging protocols. This drives the demand for AC/DC converters with high efficiency over an adjustable 3-20V range, small size, good load step response and very low no-load power. NXP introduces a complete AC/DC fast charging system covering all these requirements, comprising the TEA1936 fly-back controller, the TEA1993/98 synchronous rectifier and the TEA190x family of protocol controllers that communicate with the device to be charged. The TEA190x family supports all mainstream fast charging protocols, is highly configurable and enhances charger safety by an extensive set of hardware integrated protection features.

AC/DC converters need to provide a defined and safe supply voltage from AC mains, varying from 90 to 264 V AC. Key requirements are efficiency, no-load power consumption and size. A new requirement for wall chargers is communication to the mobile, enabling faster charging by changing voltage or current. Most common AC/DC topologies are flyback and resonant. A flyback converter features lowest cost, but magnetics size becomes larger at higher output power. In that case, resonant converters are preferred, although efficiency is lower at low loads. NXP has invented a resonant concept that overcomes this issue. The presentation will introduce the mentioned AC/DC technologies and NXP’s product advantages.
