when compiling, and do not get clean compile - - get make error1

what causes this to happen.

if I do project - clean then compile, the errors are listed.

and all is fine for a while and then do not get the errors listed and have to do the extra step of cleaning.

any ideas - - just seems to be a problem and slows down the process
