I hadn't even heard of UTM co-ordinates before your post.
It appears to be a network of alphanumerically notated grids and a coordinate is then notated in metres within the grid with a reference at a particular corner?
Besides military, what other systems use this method?
From the sounds of what wikipedia says there's odd considerations for coordinates near grid lines and strange exceptions for some areas in Europe.
