It seems PE cannot be used, and/or creates severe issues with S12X processors.
Is it so, or am I missing something?

Is PE a safe/wise way to go in the long run?

Thanks,
Anders J

Could you please be more specific in order to clarify the problem? However it seems that you are using some old version of CodeWarrior and Processor Expert. The first support of HCS12X family in Processor Expert was in PE v2.96. This first support of HCS12X family includes the following derivatives:
XDP512, XDT512, XDT384, XDT256, XD256, XDG128, XD128, XD64.

The newest version of CodeWarrior v4.7 and the newest Processor Expert service Pack v2.99 is possible to download here:

I am using CW 4.7 and PE 2.99.
After using the wizard to create a new XGATE project for XDP512
I have no PE support.

After opening PE in the newly created project it will not build,
and complains about a Target cpu not being selected.
I add a XDP512 CPU bean and try again.
Now it complains about my Softec prm file and generates various
L1818 link errors.

I give up thinking there is a major misunderstanding somewhere.

Please outline the correct way to:
A: Create a new project using XDP512, XGATE and PE.
B: Add XGATE support to a current PE based XDP512 project.
C: Add PE support to a current XDP512 project that uses XGATE.

Thank you,
Anders J

We are sorry but Processor Expert does not support XGATE core yet therefore there is no possibility to create Processor Expert project including support of XGATE.

Understood.

I have a Processor Expert based HCS12 project that I would like to
upgrade to a HCS12X cpu and use XGATE.
I am running into the difficulties discussed above,

Let me rephrase my original question.

Is it safer in the long run to NOT use Processor Expert,
to avoid building in PE-dependencies that might create problems later on
when CodeWarrior and Processor Expert might not support each other,
and future cpu devices?

Best regards,
Anders J

I am sorry for a delay. However as I wrote Processor Expert does not support XGATE therefore (if you want using PE) there is only the possibility to use HCS12X cpu without XGATE.

Regarding to your question about support of future CPUs - Of course there are still few devices that PE is not available (like XGATE) but we are supporting a very large subset of Freescale CPUs and the number of supported CPUs is still growing. Limitations of Processor Expert are described in chapter "E. KNOWN PROBLEMS AND LIMITATIONS" in "readme.txt". (.../{CodeWarrior directory}/ProcessorExpert/readme.txt ).

For example PE already supports the new Coldfire V4 CPUs and as far as I know there are currently no plans to stop or discontinue Processor Expert support  in the future (at least several years).

Here you can find some additional information about Processor Expert and Embedded Beans:
