i.MX6Q Sabre SD kernel boot crash

I have a problem with the latest Android JB distribution (jb4.2.2_1.1.0-ga) compiled on Ubuntu 12.04.

I can compiled everything without problem, but when I try to boot the Linux kernel, it crashes and resets the board with an audible "click".

The Android ICS version provided on teh SD-card, of course, works flawlessly.

Note however that I got the same behaviour (kernel boot aborting with a "click") when i Use a 5V-1A powersupply instead of the 5V-5A supply provided with the board; I then check and see that the board is using up to about 2A when the kernel is booting, probably when switching on the various peripherals, but I can't reproduce it right now (I don't have the proper poser supply here).

I hope someone will have ideas on how I could at least work around this. I've heard someone talking about suppressing kernel power management but

     1) I don't see how (there is very few PM-related config options in menuconfig)

     2) I'm afraid this could break havoc in Android...

Here is the log of the kernel boot:

Hi Bernard, has this issue been solved? What is the root cause? We encounter the same issue on our i.MX6 board. Thanks!

I just test with the already compiled uImage provided in the image_bundle tarball and I get the same result.

I wonder if this could be a compatibility problem between u-boot and the Linux kernel, as I still use the u-boot of the ICS 13.4.1 release. I will test with the proper u-boot later today but I need firts to get my SD-card reader... (I usually work only through the network, loading the kernel through TFTP and the root filesystem through NFS).

Hello Bernard,

The u-boot should not be a problem here since it is the same from previous versions.

I'm not sure that I got the situation here, can you confirm:

- You are able to boot using FSL's android SD Card with the 5v 5a power supply.

- You are not able to boot using FSL's android SD Card with the 5v 5a power supply.

- You are not able to boot your compiled card with any of the power supplies.

is this correct?

Hello

This is approximately correct:

I am able to boot using FSL's android SD Card with the 5V 5A power supply

I am able to boot using FSL's android SD Card with the 5V 2A power supply

I am not able to start the board with the 5V 1A power supply (sometimes it seems to start but crash when booting the board)

However that is not too much of a problem as I have only a few 1A power supplies and mainly 2A or 5A power supplies. The behavior I get with my compiled kernel was just reminding me of the same kind of problem when a not powerful enough board was connected.

My real problem is that when I recompile the kernel and try to boot it after loading the uImage through TFTP it crashes with the messages above, just after printing the constraints for regulator vdd3p0

I got the kernel from git://git.freescale.com/imx/linux-2.6-imx.git, tag jb4.2.2_1.1.0-ga

I compile it as instructed using the gcc compiler provided by Google in the AOSP 4.2.2 release

     I configure it as imx6_android_defconfig

I then today was able to burn the u-boot I recompiled from the sources during the Android buildn in an SD card that I partitionned as instructed and now the kernel is able to boot almost to the end! so there is indeed a dependency to the u-boot version used that should be different between the ICS (R13.4.1) that was on the original SD Card and the one I just recompile.

My kernel was not able to boot completly however and crashes silently just after the "Freeing init memory: 244K" message (he was just before that able to mount the root filesystem on NFS).

I suspect here a problem in the declaration of some functions and structures as _devinit or _initdata in arch/arm/mach-mx6/pcie.c as when compiling th ekernel manually (can't see the message in a full android build...) I get a section mismatch in this file... However solving this conflict (by removing _init tags to a few functions and data) does not change anything...

I also have a proble wiith u-boot (only able to save the environment once) but it is probably better that I report it in a second message.

Here is the log I get when booting my kernel: (note it stops at the same point if I burn everything on teh SD card and boot with the default u-boot setup)

I just tried with the NFS filesystem provided in the ga_image package and both my kernel and the official kernel works fine, as long as I use the u-boot image provided with the 4.2.2-1.1.0-ga_image package. If I use the u-boot on the original SD Card (R13.4.1 ICS) I get the abort soon in the kernel boot as explained in my first post.

So there is at least two differences between the two u-boot versions:

Some initializations are different, thus the newe kernels can't boot from a board initialized by the older u-boot

The new u-boot REFUSES to save the "botcmd" environment variable: I can change and save the content of ANY variable EXCEPT bootcmd

          I think that is VERY unconvenient! I will look at the u-boot source code to try to understand what happens;

I wonder if the variable is saved correctly but overwritten at u-boot start...

The kernel stop I noticed after the "Freeing init memory: 244K" message seems to be caused by the root filesystem; however I still have to understand what as different between the released NFS image and the one I constructed, but I have some ideas about that an shoud be able to solve that.

I will post again when everything works and I was able to correct the u-boot behavior.
