Could Floating license work through internet(WAN)

Hi

It's first time using Coldfire V2, I'm not sure about this.

I'm working at home normally, but I go to office once a week.

If I bought CodeWarrior Basic or Standard suite with floating license, and built license server in office, could I access it  from home?

Thanks for your helping.

Regards,

Max.

Hello ck_max,

CodeWarrior IDE checks the license every ~2 minutes. If you start building process or debugger... additional license features are checked out. So you should keep a connection with floating license server when working with CodeWarrior.

Usually the licensing server is loacated in a corporate intranet so it's NOT easily possible to connect to this machine from outside the network (Internet) due to FireWall, NAT,.... One possible solution is to join intranet using VPN client.

"R" in CodeWarrior Part number means "Renewal". This kind of product is relevant for Annual Subscription only. As far as I know it extend annual subscription by one year.

USB Dongle option is covered with "NL" products.

I'd suggest you to contact your local distributor. They will help you to choose the best suited product for you.

Technically, you can do that. Practically, depending upon how responsive your network is and how the firewall is configured, the network can slow CodeWarrior down to where it becomes difficult to use. I have worked licensing issues where this was the problem. Other times the network does not affect CodeWarrior at all. Your mileage may vary. Give it a try.

As an alternative, if it is just you using CodeWarrior, purchase the dongle option, and then you can carry the dongle with you.

Does CodeWarrior communite with license server all the time? Or just check the license out?

By the way, I saw there are three different type 'FL', 'NL', 'R' with the product part number.

I know 'FL' means floating license, 'NL' means  node lock license, but what is 'R'?

Is that dongle option?

Or I should purchase floating license?

Thanks for your reply.

Max.

I have experience of running Codewarrior floating license through VPN on our intranet, it works poorly. While we never noticed any performance problems, there was always fuss with the licenses of the various features. The main problems were:

- Upgrades. This was really really painful. You had to spend days and weeks on license fuss, and you often got the wrong license. (Although this was under Metrowerks 3-4 years ago, and not Freescale directly). Getting the floating license up and running was always problematic.

- Lockups. Occationally, Codewarrior decided to cling on to one license or the other. Especially the buggy debugger, which has a tendency to leave ghosts of itself running after program termination. It is just as buggy today, so you will certainly face these problems too. You'd have to phone the guy who recently used the debugger and tell him to go ghost busting in task manager. I fondly remember when one person was on vaccation with his computer on and ghosts of the debugger running on it...

My advise is to get a dongle instead, it works much smoother and will save you both time and money.

Thank you very much.

Yes, we decided to use NL and try to use a dongle.

But I got another problem.

I cannot read ID using FLEXlm.

I installed USB dongle driver, FLEXlm following the quick start guide, but I cannot see the dongle ID in FLEXlm.

Is that special USB dongle needed for it?

Or just a compatible issue between Windows7RC and FLEXlm?

Hi ck_max,

I've just installed:

1) FlexLM License Manager

2) USB Dongle Drivers

3) Dongle Driver updates

and my USB dongle FlexID is available in LMTOOLS ("System Settings" tab, "FLEXID" box).

I've checked it using  32-bit version of Windows 7, Build 7100.

Windows 7 32-bit is not officialy supported yet but it seems to work.

So you probably haven't installed driver updates yet.

I'd suggest you to see FAQ-29132 or FAQ-27403

Thanks for your information.

Could I ask an stupid question?

Does every USB dongle have FlexID? Or I need to buy a special USB dongle with FlexID?

ck_max,

no problem, there are only stupid anwers but no questions ;-)

As far as I know each USB dongle from Freescale has it's own uniqe hardcoded FlexID number.

It should be printed on USB dongle body (see attached picture).

OK, now I know the keypoint. ;(

So I have to buy a dongle with FlexID, right?

Thank you very much.

When you purchase a node-locked version of CodeWarrior and specify that the locking be done through a dongle, you should get a dongle with your copy of CodeWarrior. You'll also have to install a USB driver that allows the software to recognize the dongle. Details on the installation procedure can be found on this page.
