Hi all,

I design an device with:

  • 2 x USB typeC port (Dual role)
  • Power by any USB port, no PD
  • No battery (~ dead battery)

I'm considering to use PTN5150A for CC controller

but https://www.nxp.com/docs/en/data-sheet/PTN5150A.pdf is not have description about dead battery use case. but other doccument AMF-DES-T1908.pdf page 26 mention that it support " Dead battery mode"

Could you make clear about this feature is support or not?

Does PTN5150A fit with this system?

Thanks in advance,

HuyDinh

Hi,

Yes, PTN5150A does support dead battery mode.  When PTN5150A is not powered, and a DFP device (which provides power) is plugged in, PTN5150A will present a Rd on both CC lines at that time. So that means the DFP side should see the Rd presented by PTN5150A, and then DFP side should start apply power on VBus. It is still necessary to connect VBus from the Type-C connector to PTN5150A’s VBus_DET pin, because we need to make sure VBus is supplied with 5V to claim that there is a connection.

Best regards,

Tomas
