Hi all,

I'm having difficulty using a FIT image on both the FRWY board and my own custom board; both are having the same problem, so I'm thinking it's me and what I'm doing rather than a hardware issue.

Using the FRWY board as a topic for discussion:

I can build a FIT image using the LSDK 21.08 by the following command:

flex-builder -i mkitb -r ubuntu:lite

This generates an "itb" file for me called:

lsdk2108_ubuntu_lite_LS_arm64.itb

From uboot, I can use a TFTP server to upload the file to DDR4 memory, like this:

tftpboot 0xC0000000 lsdk2108_ubuntu_lite_LS_arm64.itb

And using the command "iminfo", I can see that the FIT file was loaded correctly, and contains all of the pieces necessary to boot linux:

=> iminfo

bootm [addr [arg ...]]
    - boot application image stored in memory
        passing arguments 'arg ...'; when booting a Linux kernel,
        'arg' can be the address of an initrd image
        When booting a Linux kernel which requires a flat device-tree
        a third argument is required which is the address of the

        a bd_info struct will be passed instead

For the new multi component uImage format (FIT) addresses
        must be extended to include component or configuration unit name:
        addr:<subimg_uname> - direct component image specification
        addr#<conf_uname>   - configuration specification
        Use iminfo command to get the list of existing component
        images and configurations.

Sub-commands to do part of the bootm sequence. The sub-commands must be
issued in the order below (it's ok to not issue all sub-commands):
        start [addr [arg ...]]
        loados  - load OS image
        ramdisk - relocate initrd, set env initrd_start/initrd_end
        fdt - relocate flat device tree

I can boot lsdk2108_ubuntu_lite_LS_arm64.itb successfully on lx2160ardb with 32G DDR memory.

The size of ubuntu lite rootfs is too large to use as itb running in DDR RAM, so it leads to "swapper/0 invoked oom-killer" (out-of-memory),  if DDR RAM is not sufficient more than 8GB.

I modified my its file to change memory locations for which piece goes where to look like this:

	images {
		kernel {
			description = "ARM64 Kernel";
			data = /incbin/("../../build/linux/kernel/arm64/LS/Image.gz");
			type = "kernel";
			arch = "arm64";
			os = "linux";
			compression = "gzip";
			//load = <0x84080000>;
			//entry = <0x84080000>;
			load = <0x94200000>;
			entry = <0x94200000>;
		};

		initrd {
			description = "initrd for arm64";
			data = /incbin/("../../build/images/rootfs_yocto_arm64_tiny.cpio.gz");
			type = "ramdisk";
			arch = "arm64";
			os = "linux";
			compression = "none";
			//load = <0x00000000>;
			//entry = <0x00000000>;
			load = <0x80000000>;
			entry = <0x80000000>;
		};

		ls1046ardb-dtb {
			description = "ls1046ardb-dtb";
			data = /incbin/("../../build/linux/kernel/arm64/LS/fsl-ls1046a-rdb-sdk.dtb");
			type = "flat_dt";
			arch = "arm64";
			os = "linux";
			compression = "none";
			//load = <0x90000000>;
			load = <0xA0000000>;
		};
.
.
.

...and I got a lot further in the boot process -

=> run bootLinux

I will continue adjusting memory locations to see if I can get further in the boot process...

Looks like with all the permutations I've tried, I still can't get the ubuntu:lite to load correctly, whereas the :tiny works just fine -  I'm going to go with Yip's explanation that it's just too large to load from DDR4, and go back to using the SD card (which works just fine)...

Thank you for your input, Sir.

I'm still learning a lot about this architecture and what it is capable of.

Good morning Yiping Wang,

Can you please explain your statement "too large"?

How much memory is required to boot a FIT image for ubuntu:lite?

How much for ubuntu:develop?

What about ubuntu:tiny?

My target system uses a 4GB DDR4 memory chip.

Thank you,

大卫

I can boot lsdk2108_ubuntu_lite_LS_arm64.itb successfully on lx2160ardb with 32G DDR memory.

The size of ubuntu lite rootfs is too large to use as itb running in DDR RAM, so it leads to "swapper/0 invoked oom-killer" (out-of-memory),  if DDR RAM is not sufficient more than 8GB.

More information:  There is a 2MB alignment-enforcement for aarch64 boot images in 5.10 kernel.  This is why the 7th line says,

[ 0.000000] [Firmware Bug]: Kernel image misaligned at boot, please fix your bootloader!

I believe the kernel entry point needs to be aligned to 0x200000.  Currently, it shows:

Entry Point:  0x84080000

I modified my linux_arm64_LS.its file to remove the ramdisk, like this:

	configurations {
		ls1046ardb {
			description = "config for ls1046ardb";
			kernel = "kernel";
/* --------------------------------------------------------------------- */
/* removed next line to test theory that ramdisk wasn't necessary - Dave */
/* --------------------------------------------------------------------- */
			/*ramdisk = "initrd";*/
			fdt = "ls1046ardb-dtb";
		};

and I actually was able to see Linux "try" to get started, as shown here:
