Nitrogen i.MX8MM Ethernet Issues

I'm having a lot of issues with Ethernet working reliably on a Nitrogen i.MX8MM device. Sometimes I get a

MDIO write timeout

in the system log, otherwise the interface just goes down. I tried resetting the phy, but once Ethernet drops I have to remove power for several seconds and then reapply power. It will then work for a minute or so.
