You should look into the way that touch keys are implemented in the LPC824 uC. It's implemented by software (guess this was the first time NXP tried the touch keys, then NXP moved to the touch keys by hardware, but the principle is the same).
Of course that turnaround is more time consuming, but might work. And if it actually works, let me know!
