As the USB Host Lite stack is from a couple of years ago, it just supports FAT16 file system. Nowadays is not common having new USB sticks in such format, as they came by default on FAT32 or exFAT file systems. It will be required using 3rd party software for formatting them on FAT16 (using Windows) or other applications like Gparted on Linux. It is mentioned on section 3 “Limitations” of AN10703:
