PCA9616 - What are the failure modes observed on the IC when it is hot plugged to a diff I2C bus (The design doesn't utilize the hot swap pins. They are left unconnected.)

I am using the PCA9616 to create a differential I2C bus to establish communication between 2 boards

When I connect the slave board(unpowered) to the master whilst it is(the Master) already powered up(EN driven high), I have noticed a failure on the PCA9616 on the master. The IC draws excess current from the VDDB and overheats (190C).

The nPIDET and nREADY pins are left unconnected on the master and slave.

The EN is unconnected on the slave board.

I am after some details that would explain this failure.
