Can someone please assist in choosing the right processor.

Got a small project to interface to a Real Time Clock and need a few I/O lines. Possibly need RF option to be able to transmit some updated RTC data or possibly control with Infra Red transmission.

Looking for the most cost effective device so does not need lots of fancy stuff. Been searching thru the web but get a little confused when I see "Not recommended for new development" - not exactly sure what that means.

Is the 68HC908RF2 still produced - if not what is a reasonable (cheap) replacement?

Many thanks

Yo,

Quite a few products have this statement because of the RoHS/Lead Free compliance.
Final products have a maximum lead allowance and MCU allowance is now zero.
These parts usually have their Lead Free replacement part number.
This is not changing the MCU inside, just the package.

As far as I know, the RF2 is still produced. Still, you can check with your distributor to be certain.
You can also go to the S08QG8. Small and power efficient. You can add a ZigBee transceiver when you need wireless.

Cheers,
Alban.
