i.MX28 NAND speeds slow, how to speed up?

What read/write speeds should I expect from the i.MX28 NAND?

I'm only seeing between 1-2MB/sec which seems very slow. Read/write speeds from/to SD Card are quite a bit faster.

I've tried bumping up the GPMI clock from the default 24MHz to 48MHz and higher. The max speed increase was around 10%. This was with kernel version 4.10 and 4.19.

I'm using two S34ML08G1 NAND devices.
