Video playback fails on i.MX Windows 10 IoT 1.4.0

Hi all,

We're trying to use i.MX Windows 10 IoT 1.4.0 with – 8MPLUSLPD4-EVK.

We saw the following video playback related comments and expected improvements.

Those comments on the P2 of release note.

"A new Malone VPU driver for hardware accelerated video decoding is added. Supported codecs:
H264, H265, VP8, MPEG2, MPEG4."

"Performance of NV12 format processing on i.MX 8M Plus and i.MX 8M Nano is improved to make
video playback performance better"

However, the comments in the release notes and the results of our trials were different as below.

As shown in the figure above, we prepared images in various formats and tried to play them using Windows Media Player, but only the first frame of the square was displayed and playback was impossible.
Audio could be played back.

Please provide video content that can be played on the 8MPLUSLPD4-EVK.

Hi @ko-hey ,

This is update from our expert, hope it can do help for you:

According my knowledge, there is only one option to play video files with reasonable performance so far and it is Movie & TV application from MS Store. https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/movies-tv/9WZDNCRFJ3P2.

I have been also told, that it is important to have correct version of Movie & TV application (ARM64): 10.22091.10031.0. Previous versions were only ARM or x86 with bad performance on i.MX8 due to running in emulation.

Media player is x86 application too and is running in emulation. You can see it in Task Manager, there is text "(32 bit)" next to Name of Process. But main problem I see is that it is not able to use VPU as Movie & TV can.

Wish you have a nice day

Best Regards

Rita

@Rita_Wang

Sorry for late reply.

Finally, we can play the video with "Movie & TV application".

On the other hand, our customer requires that play with "Windows Media Player(x86)" because customers often use "MediaPlayerControl".

Could you check how to play with "Windows Media Player(x86)"?

If your BSP doesn't support play with "Windows Media Player(x86)", could you tell us the play for support it ?
