Hello,

I am interested in obtaining the messages which are printed immediately after you run boot

You can copy them from console, there is not command to obtain it.

Meanwhile, I will try to reproduce the setup on my side and I will send you step by step what I have done.

Best regards,

Cosmin

Hello,

I have redone your setup on my side and it works.

The steps are:

1. Obtain Linux binaries from:

2. Obtain FreeRTOS sources for Linux or Windows host and compile pingpong_freertos app.

3. Uncompress L4.1.15_1.2.0-ga_images_MX7DSABRESD.tar.gz archive

4.  Uncompress fsl-image-gui-x11-imx7dsabresd.sdcard.bz2 archive

5. Flash a sdcard with fsl-image-gui-x11-imx7dsabresd.sdcard image

6. Copy on the first FreeRTOS_BSP_1.0.1_iMX7D\examples\imx7d_sdb_m4\demo_apps\rpmsg\pingpong_freertos\armgcc\debugrpmsg_pingpong_freertos_example.bin to first partition of sdcard.

7. Start the board and stop it in u-boot.

8. Change the m4image value to rpmsg_pingpong_freertos_example.bin

=> edit m4image
edit: rpmsg_pingpong_freertos_example.bin

9. Change dtb filename to imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb

=> edit fdt_file
edit: imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb

10 Modify the default bootcmd in order to load by the default the m4 image

=> edit bootcmd

edit: run m4boot; mmc dev ${mmcdev};mmc dev ${mmcdev}; if mmc rescan; then if run loadbootscript; then run bootscript; else if run loadimage; then run mmcboot; else run netboot; fi; fi; else run netboot; fi

11. Save the enviroment

=> saveenv

12. Reset the board

=> reset

13. Wait until you have access to linux's console

14. Insert the module and it should work.

Steps 1-6 can be skipped if you have already done them.

Please see the attached logs.

Best regards,

Cosmin

Hi Cosmin

Thankyou alot for the help.

Its running fine and i am getting the correct Outputs.

However there is one Thing which I want to notify here about the steps mentioned below which I followed.

And that is that after writing step 6 when I pressed (enter) then Linux kernel started booting itself and I got the Linux prompt even without writing.

=> saveenv

=> reset

----------------------------------------------------------------

steps:

1. fatload mmc 0:1 0x7F8000 rpmsg_pingpong_freertos_example.bin

2. dcache flush

3. bootaux 0x7F8000

4. setenv m4image 'rpmsg_pingpong_freertos_example.bin'

5.setenv fdt_file imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb

6. setenv bootcmd run m4boot; mmc dev ${mmcdev};mmc dev ${mmcdev}; if mmc rescan; then if run loadbootscript; then run bootscript; else if run loadimage; then run mmcboot; else run netboot; fi; fi; else run netboot; fi

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is one more Thing which I want to ask and that is that can you refer me any Manual or user guide so that I could acquire some Basic Knowledge about all These Things so that if there is any similar Problem in the future then I could fix it myself.

Regards

Ehsan

Hello,

I am glad that it worked on your side.

Regarding the issue with step 6, it's likely to be a hidden character issue in the command due to community editor. The goal of step 6 is to add in bootcmd the following "run m4boot" command. You can do it using "edit bootcmd".

In my first replies, I advised you to get the documentation:

"

More details can be found in i.mx Linux documentation from NXP:https://www.nxp.com/webapp/Download?colCode=L4.1.15_2.0.0-LINUX-DOCS

"

You should find more details in Chapter 51: Remote Processor Messaging (RPMsg) from i.MX_Linux_Reference_Manual.pdf

Hello,

dmesg  is the tool from Linux which displays the kernel's log.

In order to be able to run this command, you should do all steps described by you (1--> 9) and then to run dmesg command from linux console only after you inserted the kernel module.

Please don't forget to also send the M4's console output.

Best regards,

Cosmin

I can conclude that:

- M4 is correctly booted

- Kernel driver is inserted, but it's likely that kernel module probe did not happen, because "new channel: 0x.. -> 0x.. " message is not present in kernel log. The main cause is likely to be a wrong dtb.

Could please sent the u-boot's log also including the kernel image and dtb loading?

Best regards,

Cosmin

Hi

I dont know how to obtain u-boot log.

Is it this thing about which you are talking.

=> fatload mmc 0:1 0x7F8000 rpmsg_pingpong_freertos_example.bin

reading rpmsg_pingpong_freertos_example.bin

21880 bytes read in 29 ms (736.3 KiB/s)

=> dcache flush

=> bootaux 0x7F8000

    1. Starting auxiliary core at 0x007F8000 ...

=> setenv fdt_file imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb

=> setenv m4image 'rpmsg_pingpong_freertos_example.bin'

hi cosmin

Thank you for the help.

However there is a small Problem again..

I installed lzop library and it has successfully build the Linux kernel.

I put the imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb file inside the FAT Partition of SD Card.

I am trying to run ping pong example and for that I followed the following steps :

  1. fatload mmc 0:1 0x7F8000 rpmsg_pingpong_freertos_example.bin
  2. dcache flush
  3. bootaux 0x7F8000
  4. setenv fdt_file imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb
  5. setenv m4image 'rpmsg_pingpong_freertos_example.bin'
  6. setenv run_m4_tcm 'if run loadm4image; then cp.b ${loadaddr} 0x7f8000 0x8000; bootaux 0x7f8000; fi'; save
  7. setenv bootcmd "run run_m4_tcm; ${bootcmd}"; save
  8. saveenv
  9. boot
    The Linux kernel is booting  successfully however when I am trying to run the ping pong example with the steps shown below then
    • cd /lib/modules/4.1.15-2.1.0+g30278ab/kernel/drivers/rpmsg
    • insmod imx_rpmsg_pingpong.ko

      then It is not dispalying anything as was expected.
      can you please tell me what could be the source of the Problem or am i missing any steps ?

Hello ehsanurrub‌,

Could you please provide the u-boot + kernel log containing all info after all above steps were executed?

To obtain kernel log, please run dmesg command.

In general, the module imx_rpmsg_pingpong.ko should start to exchange messages with M4 FReeRTOS application.

All setup is described in Chapter 51 from i.MX_Linux_Reference_Manual.pdf from:https://www.nxp.com/webapp/Download?colCode=L4.1.15_2.0.0-LINUX-DOCS

Could you please also send the M4 console log?

Cosmin

Hello,

What version of software do you use for Linux and FreeRTOS demo?

It's likely that somehow, you overrode the dtb from memory or it is not loaded if your version of kernel >= 3.10, otherwise the same situation can happen for your kernel image.

Could you please provide the  complete booting console log?

Best regards,

Cosmin

Hello,

The Linux is not booting because u-boot is not able to load the dtb file:

"

reading imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb

 Unable to read file imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb *

"

This happens likely because  imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb file is not available on first partition. Could you please copy it on the FAT partition and try again?

In order to check what files do you have on FAT partition, please run the following command from u-boot console:

 fatls mmc 0:1

Best regards,

Cosmin

Hello,

The dts files which are part of Device Tree have the role to describe the hardware configuration of the board in order to be able to use one kernel image (zImage) on multiple boards with same arch (arm in your case) by selecting the specific board dtb.

dtb files are the files resulted from the compilation of dts files using dtc compiler.

Have did you obtain the sdcard image? Have you built it?

If yes, there are two possible situations:

- Building using Yocto:

- the dtb binaries can be found in <build_directory>/tmp/deploy/images/<board_name>/*.dtb

Your necessary dtb is likely to be named: zImage-imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb. Please copy it on the FAT partition of sd card renaming it as imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb.

- Building the image without Yocto:

If you built directly the kernel, you should find the imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb in arch/arm/boot/dts.

More details can be found in i.mx Linux documentation from NXP:https://www.nxp.com/webapp/Download?colCode=L4.1.15_2.0.0-LINUX-DOCS

Cosmin

and such sort of error often take quite some time for me to fix, therefore I want to ask that do you have a ready made

imx7d-sdb-m4.dtb file. ?

If yes then can you give me that ? ....  i will put it directly in the FAT partition of my SD card.

the error about which i was talking is shown in the log below :

Hello,

You don't have lzop library installed. To install this library, please use the following command and try again to rebuilt it:

sudo apt-get install lzop

I would like to help you fixing the issue on your side, because if you will change something in the future, you should be able to be built by yourself.

Please let me know if this solved the issue.

Best regards,

Cosmin
