Issue with Simultaneous Flashing of Two FRDM-MCXW71 Boards via SWD and MCUXpresso IDE

Hello,

I'm facing an issue while trying to flash two FRDM-MCXW71 boards simultaneously using MCUXpresso IDE.

Setup:

  • Primary board: Connected via USB to the PC.
  • Secondary board: Connected to the primary board via SWD (SWDIO, SWCLK, GND, RESET).
  • Software: MCUXpresso IDE (latest version).

Issue:

  1. The REST LED on the primary board stays constantly red when connected via USB.
  2. When I flash the program, the ISP, USB_ACT, and VCOM LEDs on the secondary board light up briefly, suggesting activity, but the program does not run.
  3. Flashing both boards simultaneously worked once but is not reproducible.

What I’ve Tried:

  • Verified all SWD and USB connections.
  • Updated OpenSDA firmware on both boards.
  • Tested flashing both boards individually, which works fine.
  • Reset both boards manually before flashing.

Questions:

  1. Does OpenSDA support SWD passthrough to the secondary board?
  2. Are additional IDE or firmware configurations needed for dual flashing?
  3. Do the LEDs on the secondary board confirm successful flashing or just communication?

Any advice on how to ensure consistent simultaneous flashing is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi I read this thread, and I think I cam post my question here..

I do have a FRDM-MCXW71 development board.  It has a SW interface (J12) to debug and program a MCXW71 on a (self made) prototype board, which is equiped with a SW inteface  using a tag-connect connector.
(I used this methode of developing already for an LPC55S69  product,  it excludes a expensive Seggger J-Link)

My question:
We upgraded a design using K32W041 to this MCXW71 procesor.
I thought and hoped I could use the SW interface of this FRDM-MCXW71, to do also debug the K32W.
But it doe not work.  communication lins are running. voltages and paterns seem good.  I get an error in MCUXpresso, that it does not connect tot the Core.
Can I some how get this to work?

Hello,

Hope you are doing well. Could you please share a photo of your setup?

Are you trying to flash board 2 (MCX) with board 1 debugger (LPC55)?

If that is the case, it is not possible. The available debug scenarios for FRDM-MCXW71 are mentioned on section 3 from the FRDM-MCXW71 Board User Manual.

Hope this helps.

Ricardo

Hello Ricardo_Zamora,
Thank you for your response. I’ve attached a picture of my setup.

Yes, I have seen the board user manual for the FRDM-MCX71, but I have already programmed the device using this configuration in the past but is not all time to work .

I’m not sure why it’s not working now, given that the board has an SWD interface. Maybe I need another hardware tool to program the MCX with SWD ?

Hello,

As mentioned on the "Supported debug scenarios", the MCU-Link OB on the FRDM-MCXW71 can be used for debugging the MCXW71 MCU, or can be used with an external debugger for debugging the MCXW71.

Ricardo
