Is there any way to use KW41Z by loading ZigBee application (instead of using JN series - JN5168)?
As we don't have space to keep both KW & JN series chipsets, we are planning to use KE41Z with BLE & Thread. If we need Zigbee, we should be able to switch to that by loading the stack.
Thanks
Solved! Go to Solution.
ZigBee will not be supported on KW41Z. MKW41Z Connectivity Software covers: BLE, Thread, GENFSK, IEEE802.15.4 and SMAC.
Update: ZigBee 3.0 will be supported in KW41Z in Q1 2018.
Hello Mark,
It's been recently decided to provide ZigBee support also on KW41Z. This is currently under development.

Hello Juan,
We are starting a project in which we plan to use KW41Z. Is it certain that Zigbee Stack will be available in MKW41Z. If yes, when will the next MKW41Z with Zigbee stack is planned to be released?
Regards,
Seniz
Hello Seniz,
ZigBee stack for KW41Z is planned to be fully released in Q1 2018.

Thanks but I'm not sure you really answered my question. Where can I find a list of what protocols are supported TODAY on your chips. The table you sent is helpful, but if I understand correctly, it is inaccurate as it list that the KW41Z supports zigbee, while today it really doesn't have a zigbee stack availible, which is what i'm interested. I'm thinking that it might be most efficient to just talk to someone at NXP on the phone rather than going back and forth on a thread. Do you have a recommendation on what would be the best number to call to get this type of information, and what times would be best to call?
Will only the Zigbee stack not supported by nxp or Zigbee as technology in general for the KW41Z?
-> in another link on the Web the KW41Z is promoted with possibility for Zigbee: Freescale Kinetis KW41Z Wireless MCU Supports Bluetooth 4.2, Zigbee, and Thread
and on the NXP page they say:
ARM Cortex-M0+|Kinetis KW41Z 2.4 GHz 32-bit MCUs|NXP
"KW41Z is an ideal solution for true single chip designs that require concurrent communication on both a Bluetooth low energy network and an 802.15.4 based network such as Thread." -> here SUCH AS is the keyword for me
-> For example, would it be possible to use another 3rd party stack from e.g., Ubis*s (http://www.ubisys.de/en/engineering/products-c7b.html) ?
Hello Dominik,
ZigBee stack will not be supported in KW41Z, only on JNxx devices.
The link that mentions ZigBee on KW41Z is not up-to-date (Oct 2015).
The SUCH AS, refers to the fact that there are multiple custom-stacks based on IEEE802.15.4 and we also provide the IEEE802.15.4 and SMAC standalone stacks which enable customers to generate their own stack/solution or work on the Thread Stack that is already provided.
Hi Juan,
I feel like I am missing something. I feel like I've read tons of stuff that suggest this chip supports zigbee (i.e. but support I mean NXP provides zigbee stack and application profiles). But it sounds like you are saying that is not true.
Do you know where can I get a full list of Stacks and app profiles that are supported for this chip (and the MKW-40). I'm in the process of creating a trade study table that lists all NXP SoCs that have hardware and software (stacks and apps) support for BLE, Zigbee, and Thread. My table will also list all the pertinent specs also, including cost. However, I'd hope this would already be available from NXP rather than me having to learn this by reading forums. Do you know where I can find at least a list of the protocols/stacks supported for a particular SoC?
For example: I'm also trying to figure out if there is a thread stack for the MKW-40? The datahsheet suggest that it exists, but the Connectivity Software didn't seem to have anything for Thread.
Thanks for the help. I've spent the last view days reviewing all the details of this chip, so sort of let down now that I find out it can't do zigbee.
Mark
ZigBee will not be supported on KW41Z. MKW41Z Connectivity Software covers: BLE, Thread, GENFSK, IEEE802.15.4 and SMAC.
Update: ZigBee 3.0 will be supported in KW41Z in Q1 2018.
Is it supported yet?
Hi Alex, it's currently planned for the end of March. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for your reply. You helped me before with a Thread issue.
Will it support ZLL?
Hi Alex,
Update: There are additional tests being executed on the stack. ZigBee release will be ready until April 2018.
Yes, ZLL will be supported as part of ZigBee 3.0.
Hi,
So, is there a ZigBee stack available for the KW41Z? More specifically, for the USB-KW41Z. I have been searching for it and I simply cannot find it. Thank you.
Thanks for the update.
