Can you use an accelerometer to determine when an rotating automotive wheel is pointed toward the ground ?  I assume you have to use a Gyroscope along with the accelerometer but Gyroscopes are expensive and hard to find in the automotive temperature range.  Is it possible with two accelerometers ?

Mike, you can use accelerometer, but you need a sensor defined as inclinometer.

See for example the Analog ADIS16210 (with SPI communication)

Hi Mike,

Could you please elaborate on your application/use case? I do not quite understand it now.

If you needed a gyroscope, you would have to look at other manufacturers as there are not any AEC-Q100 qualified gyroscopes currently in NXP portfolio, unfortunately.

Best regards,

Tomas

It is actually an Ag tractor application. Just need a sensor to determine

when a certain spot on the Ag tire rim is pointed toward the ground.

The environment and temperature in this application is such that the MEMS

sensor should at least operate up to and calibrated for +105C. AEC-Q100

may not be a hard requirement.

Hi Mike,

I have discussed it with colleagues from our TPMS Apps Team and they developed a project in which the TPMS monitors the angular position and transmits a frame when it reaches a pre-defined angle (the angle is defined by the user).

To do that only one accelerometer measuring the radial acceleration is required. In the TPMS this corresponds to the X-axis.

The project and related documentation can be downloaded from:

If you have any other questions, please let me know.
